As Midori struggled to properly hook up the ridiculous piece of machinery that was the newest station, the Armadon, she was lost in the glorious thought of finally getting online to play the hottest game on the market: Herioica: Fantasy Origins. It had become the best selling game of the year in a matter of weeks and was on the fast track to becoming one of the best MMORPG’s of all time. Midori had shelled out over $200 for the game and the console needed to play it but she was finally ready!
She finished hooking up the console to my TV and turned the console on. Lights flashed and she was swept into the world of Heroica. She started a new character and modeled it after herself as best she could but with generic pre-made RPG character templates it can be a real chore to get a good image of yourself.
Midori's avatar was a near exact image of herself. An all white wolf with a blond stripe running down the middle of her back. It took over her tail except for the tip which was her main fur color. Her feet were also a blonde color up to her ankles. She had deep green eyes that were the color of midnight grass.
When she was finished creating her character, Midori was informed by the game that over three million people were playing in her region alone. Three million?! She thought to herself. It looks like I’ve got a lot of catching up to do! Hopefully someone will be willing to show a complete noobie around the game. Knowing online communities though all I’ll have to do is speak into my microphone once and I’ll have people begging to help me!
As Midori giggled to herself over the thought, she went through the tutorials the game forced you to go through and was finally ready to begin exploring and making new friends. She found herself in a virtual village full of other players all interacting in various ways. Some were dueling, some trading, some were just spamming emoticons and cheezy internet references at each other.
Midori flipped on her microphone and tried to start a conversation in the public chat with someone. “Hey, I just got this game today, if anyone experienced would be willing to help me out, it would be really appreciated!” However, all Midori was met with after a few seconds were several messages sent directly to her asking for “ASL” or otherwise telling her to figure things out for herself if she was so desperate.
Gee, thanks, Heroica community. Really helpful.  Midori thought to herself. Just as she was about to quit looking for help and wander off to do some level grinding, Midori found her path blocked by a player who clearly had been playing Heroica for quite some time. His character model was wearing elegant armor that was a dark blue with a white trim and menacing looking spikes.  The player also carried a beastly looking sword that looked as though it could cut through solid rocks, and the player himself looked like he meant business. Oh great, now one of these jerks is probably gonna murder me and I’ve been playing for like ten minutes!
His avatar was that of a white wolf's with blue, tiger like markings over his body. His tail was that of a tiger's and had the same markings. His eyes were a bright orange in color and reminded Midori of summer fire.
“I’m sorry the other players around here are so immature,” the player said. His voice was calm and collected, but also had a tint of nervousness to it, as if he were afraid to be talking to another person. "I’d be glad to assist you in any way I can, my friend.”
Midori was stunned. A player who was this nice was probably either setting her up for a horrible prank or had something horribly wrong with him. Regardless, she was willing to go along for the time being. The player motioned for her to follow him, so she did. They walked out of the village and just strolled along, as if not caring for anything in particular.
“My name is Serge by the way. I’ve been playing this game since the day it came out. Sadly, I haven’t had much to occupy my spare time so I’ve devoted it to this. But you probably guessed that from the gear I have. And I suppose being at the maximum level possible is a pretty good tip-off that I’ve played plenty.”
Midori wasn’t really sure what to say in response to any of this. He was blatantly admitting that he was a complete game freak but he also seemed to be justifying it. "So what do you do besides this?” Midori asked.
“Well I have to work most of the time,” Serge replied.  “If I don’t work I don’t eat, it’s as simple as that. Other than that, I just sit in my apartment and play video games. My roommate sometimes drags me out to do something with him but that doesn’t happen too often.”
“How old are you exactly, Serge?” Midori asked.
“I’m eighteen.  And before you even ask, I wanted to go to college but my parents,” he paused for a moment. “Well let’s just say my parents aren’t around. So I had to get a job and a new place to stay. I was lucky to find someone who would share their space with me and a job that can keep me fed. By the way, what’s your name?”
       “Midori.”
“Interesting name! The Japanese word for green, am I right?”
“Yup! I'm called that because if my eyes. Your name isn’t exactly ordinary either, ya know. I haven’t run into too many ‘Serge’s’ in my lifetime.
“Fair enough. But what’s in a name right?”
“Oh so now you’re quoting Shakespeare at me?”
“It’s not like I worship the guy as the father of literature like some people do. I just appreciate his works. They’re undeniably great and there’s some really fantastic lines in them.”
“Okay jeez! No need to get all defensive on me!”
“Sorry, I’m incredibly really passive aggressive and it can spill over into me being far too rash in a discussion. Especially when the discussion involves things I’m passionate about.”
“I guess I can respect that. By the way, where are we going exactly? We’ve been walking here for awhile and we’re already in the mountains!”
It was true, Serge and Midori had traversed the entire path from the village they started from and were now climbing a mountain trail. The mountain was coated in snow and one could hear the snarls of enemies in the distance.  Midori became a little nervous. She was a mere level 1 character walking down the roads only players over level 100 would normally traverse.
“How do you expect me to fight enemies around these parts?” Midori asked.
“I don’t. I expect you to stay safe and leech off of me while I take care of the hard part for awhile.” Serge answered.
“Well that kinda takes the fun out of the game, don’t you think?”
“Only for a short time. You’re going to gain a lot of experience in about two minutes and then you’ll be all set to go hunting on your own!”
“Well I guess you are the expert here.”
Serge brought Midori into a cave that existed on the side of the mountain. Inside, Midori could already see monstrous looking beasts dwelling inside such as mountain lions and small dragons. Serge pointed Midori to a rock where she could sit and wait.  Serge then drew his sword, and charged at the beasts. They sure looked tougher than they were compared to Serge. They were all slain by a single blow. For each one that Serge killed, Midori got half of the experience points.
Half was more than enough however since with only about ten of the beasts slain, Midori had risen fifteen levels! Midori couldn’t believe this was actually happening! Some guy somewhere in the world was actually doing this for someone he had just met!
It has to be because I’m a girl, Midori thought. There’s no way he’d do this for anyone else. He probably thinks that if he butters me up enough he’ll get some kind of reward out of it. Maybe I should be direct with him now and say that if he’s looking for a prize he should just leave now. Or maybe he is just a really nice guy who would help anyone who asked him for help. Maybe he’s actually gay and that’s why he wants a female friend online! Because all the other guys online are so terrible! Okay, I’m just gonna be direct with him and if he leaves me here to die, well.....SO BE IT!
“Hey, Serge, can I ask you something?”
“Sure Midori, what’s up?” Serge said as he continued to slay beasts.
“Are you only doing this for me because you’re looking for some sort of prize? Like...pictures?”
Serge stopped fighting and walked over to Midori. “Not gonna lie, I’m a little offended you asked that. But I can understand why you did ask. The answer is no, I’m not looking for any kind of prize. I just wanted to help out a new player and possibly make a friend. I don’t know your personal history so I can’t claim to understand how weird it may or may not be for you to find a guy online who isn’t in it for some kind of sick kick, but I want to reassure you that I’m not going to try and coax anything out of you.”
In reality, Midori’s jaw was on the floor. The way he spoke was so honest, so genuine that there was no way he could be lying. She took a moment or two to process what had been said while in-game the two characters were still staring each other down. Finally, Midori snapped out of it and got back in game. It had become clear to her what was going to become of this and what had to be done right away.
“Serge, I’m sorry I doubted you. And I think this is going to be the beginning of a wonderful friendship.”
Serge was silent for a moment, then spoke up. “And I think that Heroica is going to be even more fun for me now than it ever has been.”
